Nighttime hot flashes and night sweats affect up to eighty percent of peri and postmenopausal women for an average of seven to nine years. That’s a long time to be uncomfortable while sleeping and wake up overheated and dripping in sweat.

There are many effective, science-backed strategies for hot flashes and night sweats, ranging from hypnotherapy to behavioral modification to hormone therapy. Another option that can complement any of these options is new high-tech pajamas designed to help you stay cool and wick away moisture from the body while you sleep. Two companies have developed menopause clothing for nighttime hot flashes and night sweats.

About Lusomé

Lusomé creator Lara Smith looked throughout North America and Europe for a sleepwear brand with beautiful style and fabrics. She found several moisture-wicking brands, but they were using 100% polyester and chemicals in the finishing process. The urge to find a better solution occurred as Lara watched her sister battle breast cancer and the uncomfortable long-term side effects associated with the treatments.

Lusomé uses Xirotex fabrics, which were tested against other brands by the University of Alberta. Researchers found that “Xirotex fabrics used in Lusomé sleepwear have excellent moisture management properties, which have been demonstrated through moisture management testing. The grade 5 rating of these fabrics means that moisture is effectively transported from the inside of the fabric, closest to the skin, to the outer surface where it will be able to evaporate.” The result is that the fabric will help keep your body feeling comfortable rather than clammy.

About Become

Become is on a mission to support female health and well-being. The company makes pajamas and other clothing and sheets to reduce the severity and frequency of hot flashes caused by menopause, illness, surgery, and prescribed drugs.

The clothing features their patented Anti-Flash™ Technology. The technology within their fabrics reacts to surges in body temperature, cooling you down and wicking away moisture while reducing the chill experienced after a hot flash. The company claims that its technology is superior to sportswear since it’s designed specifically for hot flashes and night sweats. Become has tested its clothing with two research organizations. The Hohenstein Institute, one of the world’s leading research centers in the field of clothing and humidity management, and Inside Climate, a company focused on humidity management in the apparel industry.

Putting the Pajamas to the Test

We tried knee-length sleeveless nightgowns from Become and Lusomé . Here’s what our 55-year-old tester with hot flashes and night sweats thought.

Lusomé

I liked the Erin nightgown. It’s stylish and a bit sexy while still comfortable sleeping in. It features mesh straps, and there’s some breast support to make it more shapely. I am a size 2 and tried a small. Possibly, I could have sized down, but it wasn’t too big. I’m 5′ 4″ tall, and the nightgown came down to my knees, not too short or long. The material is very soft and on the thick side. The thickness of the material made it feel like a quality pair of pajamas, but I was worried I would be too warm at night. In fact, I stayed cool when sleeping. The nightgown washed well – came out looking new!

Lusomé products are sold through its website and in stores throughout Canada. There are few reviews on the website, but the company won the “Overall Best Cooling Pajama Brand” – Good Housekeeping Institute, April 2022. Shipping is free for purchases over $150, and you can return a product for a refund or exchange within 14-days of arrival. I tried the Anti-Flush Nightie in a size small. The nightgown is close-fitting and extremely lightweight. The fabric is very thin. I think the thinness of the fabric definitely keeps you cool when sleeping, and it did wick away moisture from night sweats. Because this nightgown is so lightweight and thin, it’s perfect for hot climates or when traveling, and you don’t want pajamas taking up too much room in your suitcase.

I also had the opportunity to try a camisole and shapewear. The camisole is made from the same material as the nightgown and works well for layering under a shirt or sweater. The shapewear is not overly tight and lightly smooths and shapes your hips, tummy, and thighs. If you’re looking for more slimming, Become shapewear may not be for you, but I don’t like super-tight shapewear, so it was perfect for me.

Become products are sold through its website. They are rated 4.5 out of 5 stars over 1,853 reviews on TrustPilot. The company offers a 60-day money-back guarantee and ships free to the U.S. with the purchase of two products. Get 25% off sitewide and free shipping when you buy any 2 items.
